After checking further, I have to agree with you. Darwinian gradual evolution, like a morphing from one form to the next, is not supported entirely by the fossil record.

I don't find this as "evidence" that God came down and wiped out the old species and planted a new one. I see it as some process that we don't yet understand, or some gaps in the fossil record we can't explain.

If it turns out God DID do it, I'll give Him His props! Maybe we're due for a Godly rework?

As for evolution, we see it clearly in organisms with short enough lifespans that we can observe it directly. We can now even cause it, and are beginning to direct it. The experimental evidence, if not the fossil evidence, is coming IN for evolution.
