That's not a weakness of the market. It will not be cheap to apply the technology in a non-market based system either.

As an example - gun shows as I understand them that avoid background checks strike me as wrong.

There isn't a "gun show loophole", people at a gunshow have to follow the same laws and regulations they follow outside of a gunshow. That is normal private owners do not require background checks when they transfer guns, and gun dealers do. If I owned a gun, and I wanted to sell it to you, than I wouldn't have to do any background check whether or not we where at a gun show. There is a good reason for that. Regular people aren't set up to do background checks and it would be hard for them to be set up to do one. If you insist on such checks than all transfers have to be funneled through dealers.
