Al-Qaeda is currently a minor player in Iraq but still a serious concern because the Sunni population there has, for the most part, decided to make a go of supporting a national government. It is true that Al-Qaeda made an effort to secure Iraq as a step toward their goal of conquering and subduing populations, after the fall of Saddam. And it is true that this opportunity existed because our military operations had brought an end to Saddam's reign. It is also true that it was intended by the Bush administration to bring Al-Qaeda to a battle front in Iraq rather than go after them in their various caves and mountain retreats through out the globe. That was a strategic decision and we have no way of knowing if the alternative (going after them everywhere) would have worked out better or worse. However, the current reality remains that, Al-Qaeda is in Iraq because Iraq represents an important and strategic opportunity for fundamentalist Sunnis to gain a strong foot hold in the world militarily and economically. The USA is in their way, but Al-Qaeda would definitely be there big time if we left. They are not there big time now only because we are there. You've got it backwards... as usual. Al-Qaeda for the time being has been hobbled in Iraq because the Sunni populations are convinced that the US and Iraqi combined forces have the upper hand. Without that assurance the Sunnis would live in deadly fear of Al-Qaeda and would join them rather than be tortured by them. It wouldn't be easy but the scenario exists. The Shi'ite militant/military power has become a significant concern for Al-Qaeda, mostly because of the Sadrists. But the National Army of Iraq is also becoming a well oiled machine, and with time and our support, it will be able to secure the hostile areas currently inhabited by Al-Qaeda and Al-Qaeda sympethizers. The Iranians and the Syrians would certainly get involved if Al-Qaeda began to pose a serious threat. The Saudis, Egyptians, Jordanians, the Turks and others would get involved to fight the Iranians and the Syrians ... And of course the rest of the world would not sit idly by watching the theatrics. That is very clear and an easy to predict course under those circumstances for the Middle east? It is simply not acceptable and your paranoid psychosis over the Bush Presidency is irrelevant to those facts regarding our current reality.
