Adding to the evidence, the recently published Economic Report of the President 2008 contains a nifty graph on page 94. It shows that during the past 25 years, as imports have been trending inexorably up as a share of our economy, the unemployment rate has been trending DOWN.

I suspect that has mostly to do with the definition of unemployment. For example, if you defined it as the fraction of Americans employed, I doubt it is true. Not that I would expect ANYTHING out of CATO to catch nuance. It is hard to forget the many years of denying smoking caused cancer.

What I've read is that while people do find employment after losing jobs due to the exportation of jobs, on average the jobs they find pay less than their old jobs. I'm not saying that is absolutely the case, but it does seem that simply comparing unemployment rates to import numbers may not tell the whole story.
