"Sorry it's only up a little over 200% since 1999"

In what universe?

Basic math, price in 1999 $1 today $3, (3-1)/1 *100 = 200%

Sorry that you don't understand it.

Like the Prius?

They didn't make Prius's in the 1970's. Not that many people buy Prius's, at least not compaired to all Toyota's sold in the late 70's.

That was because of rationing. We don't have that now. If it gets that bad, well...

You are obviously too young to live through it. This was not during WWII the lines came first, then in some areas rationing was used to shorten the lines. Such as odd number tags can buy gas only on odd number days, even number tags on even number days. Not the same as WW II rationing. In WW II people were given coupons for say 5 gallons of gas per week. This kept people away from the gas station and did not cause gas lines.

Have you tracked the fate of companies who sell a lot of SUV's and pickups? Ford, for example.

Yet Toyota is doing fine with their pickups, though they no longer have a small truck, the Tocoma is now midsize. Seems there is only a moderate number of people downsizing their vehicles.
