Bill, I loved it as I was processing out of the Army and a Captain (I had never seen him before) looked at my paperwork and said, "hey, did you know you are eligible for reenlistment?" Wow, now that was spontaneous. <VBG>

Everybody claimed to hate the Army and carried a short-timers calendar with them. But some secretly liked the life and re-upped in the states, then requested assignment somewhere other than their previous post. I remember one guy well. He, like I, had been mysteriously made a Staff Sergeant instead of a Spec 6 when we were promoted. He kept on telling everyone "I'm short, 45 days and a wakeup" and morale building stuff like that. Then, he went back to the states and reenlisted. He requested a new assignment, but was sent right back to our base in southern Germany. He'd been a bit naive. He was a Czech linguist and a good one. The Army had spent tens of thousands training him and big bucks on his reenlistment bonus. They were going to use his specialty. And there just isn't a lot of demand for whiz bang Czech linguists in the States or Japan or somewhere other than the Czech border in Germany.

Everyone called him "Shorty" from then on.
