tell him to adopt a "i don't give a hoot" attitude, learn to give good reflexology, and say "i don't mean anything by it, but can we hold hands while we walk" be different it is rewarding often enough

Before you 'solve' this problem, think about how far and how fast things can go once he is not awkward around girls. It only takes a moderate amount of social instruction for many to get over shyness/awkwardness and learn to start and continue conversations. A little more instruction about learning to listen, a bit more about how to push girls' hot buttons, and you may have a real problem. Don't assume the 12 year old girls will make mature decisions.
