I've never been to the sand dunes but if you have never been to Aspen I'd go that way. Crested Butte is worth the stop too.

I visited the Sand Dunes over 20 years ago - what a great place, and beautiful scenery on the western slope of the Rockies. We took that drive on the way to the narrow gauge railroad - Antonito to Chama, which hugs the Colorado - New Mexico border. I would love to take my two young boys there someday.
