Another point you're neglecting is that people didn't buy Toyotas in the late '70's ONLY for the gas mileage, they also bought them because they were GOOD cars while our at that time were complete crap, and everyone knew it.

Then why didn't they buy BMW's and Mercedes instead? Because the Toyota's burned less gas. That is not to say they were not very good cars. Why did they turn away from the small cars to SUV's? Because the small cars did not fit their needs. Now even Toyota has large cars, though the largest is not sold under that name. The Tundra is quite popular and a bit of a gas hog.

Some of the larger cars were well made, my Buick was very good, and very reliable, it just burned 12 gallons a mile, and did so for well over 100,000 miles without burning oil. It was the lower higher volume Chevy's and Fords that were almost junk.
