Because for a Bush-voting rube, quality is image and perception, not fact-based reality. They are more luxurious and convey more status to other rubes.

For me, a vehicle is a device to get me from A to B. I buy fully depreciated used Japanese cars for cash, seeking out ones with body damage that doesn't impair function, get liability insurance only, and drive them until the repair cost exceeds their value. I sell them for what I paid or as near as I can get to it and get another one. I usually own two of these at a time, so I've got a spare.

Don't feel bad about being a rube manipulated by Madison Ave. and other spinmiesters - most people are.
