The United Nations Security Council approved a third set of sanctions against Iran, buttressing the Bush administration's campaign to pressure Tehran economically for its refusal to suspend its nuclear program.

The U.N. vote came after nearly a year of deliberations among the world's major powers, with Russia and China regularly voicing opposition to further financial penalties against Iran. U.S. officials yesterday hailed the resolution as a clear signal that the international community remains united against Iran.

Fourteen of the Security Council's 15 members voted to pass the resolution, with only Indonesia abstaining.
