What do you think a government forcing you to do something for a period of years really *is*?

(Now --- perhaps keeping more with the proper spirit for a 'free people', and keeping with the concept that 'service is patriotic' a bit more --- why not pair the option of military service with some kind of useful civilian service, all under the rubric of 'national service'... and rewarding both with free college education of tax breaks or something?)

That way... you could see that *both* service options were well-met, and still in the spirit of freedom, not government mandate?

(On the other hand... if you stick with the mandate for service, then I'd be with you that --- like the Swiss or Israeli examples --- everyone should serve, no exemptions.)
