So many of those whose health habits are bad or non existent have a mental illness... Most of the homeless have some form of mental disability. I do not mean ALL but who in their right mind would choose to live on the streets without the possibility of showering or ablutions.

The biggest problem as I see it is that we have no facilities for these people nor workers to teach them how to care for themselves..
It's a conundrum...

Our prison system is over burdened. We don't have sufficient space not is the training of the guards the best.

In other words more money is needed to train and hire those who will work with these persons and more has to be done with them. I don't blame your father at all for refusing to service them but the problem goes far beyond..

I don't have all the answers but again it takes funding..

My habitual cry is to utilize retired persons.. We never seem to tap into the resources we have to help run a better society.

Anybody else use government provided health care besides me? How did it compare to privately provided health care for you? Let's see a show of hands.

Depends on what you mean. As I understand this conversation it's about health care insurance. On that score, more than a few of us receive Medicare. In my case, I've found it much friendlier and more efficient than private insurance.

Ilaine -

I grew up on Air Force bases all over the country. I was just a kid, but I remember the medical services as being "adequate". Certainly, the experiences I've had in the past couple of years at Cedars Sinai have been superior.

I've also had medical care in Sweden (excellent) and Mexico (adequate to sub-standard)

But I don't know if this is germane. I don't think anyone is suggesting that we nationalize the healthcare system. Nor is anyone trying to take premium healthcare away from those who can afford to pay for them. Well, I suppose some people may want to do that, but I haven't heard anyone propose it.
