Bush is the greatest post WW2 champion of deficit spending although Reagan was close. Lets return to the budget surpluses of the 90s.

a result of the housing and credit debacle

Of course the housing and credit debacle is a result of Bush Jr.'s failed economic policies. He and the Fed combined deregulation with extremely easy credit so that it would appear the economy was actually growing during the Bush term, when in fact the only growth was a fraction of the incurred debt.
