There's an enormous amount of space for improvement short of a single-payer system. It's not binary. Besides, people always focus on how some problem will be fixed forgetting that other problems, perhaps worse, will be created.

To be clear, I don't think anyone here is defending the current system, only asking for a more middle ground kind of discussion, instead of automatically substituting an entirely different one.

I don't think I've heard anyone from any party defend what we have. Even the most ardent anti-single payers know we have serious problems to be addressed. But I am willing to listen to their ideas for programs or systems other than a single payer. I see no reason to set up an either/or at this point.
