It's the rightwing in their dying throes. Like cornered rats, they become particularly vile and vicious right before they are exterminated. Remember, even GOP voters rejected them soundly this year. Not a single pro-Bush candidate got anywhere near the nomination. McCain only got it by default because he was the only major candidate who is not totally addicted to the Bush-cheney koolaid propaganda. In other words, he's the only one who isn't a corporate neo-fascist.
