Petsmart Sinks In Pre-Market On Drop In Q4 Profit [PETM]

3/6/2008 9:27:00 AM Petsmart (PETM) eased in pre-market trading, down about 7 percent. The slump came as the company reported a decline in fourth-quarter profit.

The stock was down $1.50 just before 9:25 am ET, sliding to $20.75. If pre-market losses hold, the stock will open at its lowest level since late January.

Petsmart reported fourth quarter net income of $75.4 million or $0.59 per share, compared to $76.9 million or $0.56 per share, for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006.

Net income for the fourth quarter of 2007 excluding the 14th week and the costs to exit the State Line Tack business was $0.52 per share.

Net sales for fourth quarter of 2007 increased to $1.33 billion, compared to 1.17 billion in fourth quarter of 2006. The impact of the 14th week on net sales was approximately $90 million.

Analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial expected the company to report earnings of $0.59 per share on revenues of $1.33 billion for the quarter.
