>i>So I doubt a Medicare tier for the great unwashed and supplemental insurance for the rest of us would hold up.

Karen, I think the needs of the uninsured trumps this problem. And I am confident that, should the rhetoric shift to offering incentives for medicare for all plans, the policy shops will be full of creative proposals addressing all these problems.

My big concern is the hold that business based lobbyist have over the legislative process. Which makes it terribly difficult to get reasonable policy proposals through.

That's one of the several reasons I think Obama holds more promise than Clinton. And certainly more than McCain.

I was just talking to a client who is having a hard time paying her medical bills and is considering bankruptcy, but only has $5K in credit card debt.

I asked her why she did not join an HMO.

Oh, she loves her doctor and would not want to be forced to go to an HMO doctor.

I told her I don't love my HMO doctor but all I pay for anything is co-pays. I believe this really is the most rational choice, particularly as one ages and faces more chronic health care issues.

She's going to look into it.

The next most rational choice would be bare-bones coverage. People who want luxuries have to pay up for them in every other life situation.

>>There are a lot of people, at least people I've chatted with here, who find abhorrent the notion that some get better or more health care than others. Equality trumps everything.<<

Karen -

When you say "here", are you referring to this thread? I haven't seen anyone on this thread disparage the idea of having supplemental plans available to those who want and can afford them.
