you:

I sure hope you are right. Today will be a volatile day for stocks with unemployment number coming and the usual negative news that keep coming on.

me:

To me the real risk is that the rest of the world will also start to slow down. Personally, I think the U.S. is going to be going through a major adjustment as it transcends from an oil/auto based economy to a less energy intensive model. This is something that is going to take years to accomplish.

It's somewhat ironic that we've spent trillions fighting terrorism when the real terrorists were in the White House. It's hard to imagine how any terrorists could have concocted a better plan to destroy America than what the White House has done by seeking a more oil solution through the invasion of Iraq. Just imagine how far along we would have been if we had taken just a small part of the trillions of $s spent in Iraq and spent them on the greening of America. Besides the obvious reductions in reliance on foreign oil, there would have been whole new industries created.

From a political point of view, having a Saddam still in power would have gone a long way towards containing Iran. Bush took a small problem and made it a giant one for no apparent reason other than his oil oriented background. Bush had a hammer and oil was the only nail he ever considered.

The financial problems alone would have been solvable, but adding this energy problem to the situation guarantees this is not going to be you typical garden variety recession.
