But, that was before they found out that the electrical wiring would catch on fire when appliances were turned on. Not to mention all the other problems. It was supposed to be completed in 2006, but now they don't know when it will be finished. As a result, no one really knows what the actual costs will be. They have spent in excess of $600 million already. "Second, I have no frame of reference as to the cost - what does our embassy in France cost, for example, or what would it cost if we had to build one today?" Most embassies aren't specially built. Generally, they take a conventional commercial building and spend a million or two to convert it. Canada was going to build one in Moscow. $30 million was budgeted for it. Now Moscow is usually ranked as the most expensive city in the world, so that figure is probably at the upper limit.

In another post, I gave a comparison to an airport terminal, a building that services millions. How many office buildings in Houston cost a billion dollars to build; how many hotels; how many condo buildings etc. Do you have no sense of what's reasonable? We should both be incensed as Americans. Instead, you pull your punch because a GOP admin. is building it. And so, this country is in decline.
