Expected yes. Absolutely. Please never feel I do not expect what goes on here. I just don't think it's nice. And yes, I think it is different to ridicule an idea versus a person. That is why we have the fallacy of the Ad Hominem. There's a reason that's a fallacy.

"When you mock an idea, particularly when you quote a statement someone else made doing it, its gonna be taken as mocking the person who said it one way or another."

A person and an idea are not equivalent. They are not the same thing. If they were, the concept of the Ad Hominem would not exist, would it? My "covert commenting", as you call it, is simply my attempt to skirt ad hominems. I know, that's terribly sneaky of me, but I can but try- as I did here. Apparently I failed to get my point across to you, but I did try.

Mme Mao:'m glad you have this *open* thread

ME: Then why are you complaining about it operating as an open thread?

Brumar: Me too. Being able to express one's opinions freely is great.

ME: I strongly commend Sully on his management of the thread. Excellent job.

Brumar: A person can ban and "ignore" people they don't like, but they just can't silence them.

ME: I suspect Mme. Mao doesn't practice law because she can't put the judge, jury, and opposing counsel on ignore.

Mme Mao: It makes a difference, at least to me, whether a poster is clearly personal, or simply talking about ideas.

Brumar: Actually, you do communicate with me and others on this thread. And not just with this post. You read this thread as well as PfP and covertly comment. So does Baker and others. When I and others here comment on things you and others on the View thread say we do so openly and straight forwardly. You just wish we didn't comment at all.

ME: Amen. They expect their ban button to silence all dissent. When it doesn't, they scream like kiddies whose toy has been taken by Momma. And yet they do the same thing they complain about and consider that OK.

Brumar: Thanks for giving me a laugh so early in the day. Long experience has taught me that real sustained disagreement (w/o an undue amount of butt-kissing, back-patting) with you inevitably ends up being framed by you as a "personal attack", being told "I don't like you" .."never post to me again" blah blah blah ... followed by an unsolicited post to the hated one a month or two later.

ME: As a frequent recipient of this by both her and Baker, I could not possibly agree more.

Brumar: BTW, the problems and failures of socialism are well known. Capitalism otoh is great at giving people what they want as affordably as possible. Its just that what people want and what others think they ought to want may be two different things.

ME: Tsk, tsk. One of te failures of capitalism is it fails to dictate your diet! :-)
For anyone thinking that's a stretch, wait till we have socialized medicine (which I fear is coming) and the guvmint claims it has a solid reason for doing so.

-------------------------------------------------------

Brumar: Lastly I will point out something - we are all posting on public boards here, not sending private emails. In such an environment, free public comments/replies on what we say ought to be expected.

ME: Amen. If they wish private conversations not open to others, they have PMs and email. This is like publishing in a magazine or newspaper: you tacitly agree to take the shots that come. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.
