Nobody cares about the rightwing base anymore. They all hate McCain, but some of them will vote for him anyway. The rightwing base will either stay home or be motivated by hatred in 2008. Either way, they are a negative destructive influence and their policy ideas will be roundly rejected by both campaigns. The one exception is that McCain will have to pretend Iraq is going great and needs to keep going. He has no choice but to spin Iraq as a success as it's his only issue. But certainly he knows what a frigging disaster it is, and how unsustainable it is either in terms of spending and troops. Our troops are totally exhausted. They need a 3-4 year break.
