You data is correct - if there was a cheaper solution, people would do that. Usually the price of owning a car is 33% car purchase (or value loss), 33% is gasoline, and the rest goes to service, tires, insurance etc. Total price to own a car is by many considered to be about $1/mile, some a bit more, some a bit less. My expenses are only $0,84 per mile, but my cousin drives a Mercedes B-class at $2 per mile.

The prices are calculated using current dollar exchange rates.
