Not my argument but obviously many voters thought so and who knows, most of the democrats voted for the war.

The problem with the 2 party system is that mostly it isn't a vote for someone but a "rather than" choice. Given that it is likely to be a choice between Hilary Clinton, Obama and McCain I think many voters will vote for McCain even though they don't like his stand on the war or immigration because they dislike the other choices MORE.
