Well, Bush and Paulson claim they have a "strong dollar policy"! A Volker would RAISE interest rates, CAUSE a recession, TAKE the pain and restore the buck. He would have stolen the low interest rate puchbowls from the bubble parties BEFORE they got out of hand. He'd also be about as popular as poison at the time, and only appreciated in retrospect. That's why these guys are independent from the pols that appoint them and the public. But, even that doesn't insure they do the right thing. Perhaps the entire function should be turned over to a computer program. Skynet anyone?<g>
