You know, I was just talking about great leaders with my sophomores- in the context of Macbeth. And you'd be surprised how many rather dictatorial folks came up when I asked them to list who were some great leaders- we got Gengis Khan, Caesar, Buddha, Gandhi, Lincoln, Washington, Roosevelt, Hitler, and Stalin. (And I'm guessing Stalin got mentioned because we learned about the Russian Revolution when we read Animal Farm.) But the students stressed that "great" leadership had nothing to do with "goodness" or "morality"- which I think is an interesting point, and one I really hadn't expected them to bring up.

Then we discussed the qualities we'd like leaders to have (ideally)- and none of us really wanted a guy like Stalin or Hitler as our leader.

Anyway, it was a fun discussion.
