Yes, there is a lot of economic pain out there. Iraq is deeply unpopular.

But McCain is running even with his likely opponents in early polls.

There is something behind that. I'm sure McCain's staff is tearing apart the numbers to find out just what, and make that a major theme for him going forward.

By all rights, any Democratic nominee should be 8-10 points up on a Republican promising to continue Bush's policies. Taking the supposed Democratic advantage for granted could be the last mistake they make this year.
