Was just looking into them for my Mother who is all hepped up on getting one. ROI appears to be from three to 18 years over gas (depending on what models you are comparing it to).

Of course, that doesn't take into consideration the "green" warm fuzziness that counts as psychic income for people.

It's more about doing your part to reduce oil consumption than saving money. You know, "Random acts of kindness" and all.

i really don't understand the hybrids... most that i have researched simply do not provide enough fuel efficiency to justify the extra cost

Have to agree. Here in SV we have probably more hybrids per thousand people than anywhere. My take is, they're mainly a feel-good thing... a badge of greenness for people wth money to burn.

Personally I drive a 1996 Civic HX and get 35mpg in mixed driving. Far more economical and green than a hybrid, allowing for depreciation and the environmental cost of manufacturing. Very pleasant car to drive.

The next car will be a reasonably priced plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of at least 30 miles. Doesn't exist yet, but the Civic is only 12 years old, so no rush.
