A VW Jetta diesel will get over 50mph on the highway. This coming 2009 model has jumped the HP to 140 to 100 too.
Honda Accord Diesel will do 52 mph on the highway. Both are "clean" Diesels.

Mix up some bio-diesel and your running really cheap.

>>>also agree..my '94 corolla gets 30-33 mpg amd on extended trips can approach 40mpg..hybrids not worth the investment..also 2 years ago EPA said a Prius got 60mpg..they admitted their testing premise was faulty..last year they said the Prius was 48 mpg..i almost went Prius based on the 60!!!<<<

You are perfectly correct. I even once got 40 mpg on a nonstop 240-mile trip in a 2003 Camry. Downwind and slightly downhill.

I do, however, drive a Prius and I like it a lot. Under some conditions (gently rolling country roads) I have in fact got 60 mpg, but that is a rare exception. But I will admit that I mainly got it for the same reason that many years ago I put together a stereo assembly that was better than anything I really needed. If gasoline goes to $8.00 I will come out ahead financially.
