It's not surprising that she believes this -- radicals nearly always do; otherwise they wouldn't be pushing for radical change. However, when Ms. Obama tells a predominantly African-American audience that America has gotten "meaner" during her 44 years, it's hard to take her seriously. As John Podhoretz puts it: <<< When Michelle Obama was born, racial intermarriage was against the law in at least two dozen states. Governors were standing in front of university and classroom doors, attempting to bar black children and teenagers from entering white-only institutions. The per capita income of African Americans has risen sixteen-fold over the past 40 years. Black homeownership has risen tenfold. The black poverty rate has declined from 75 percent to 25 percent. Over the past 13 years, a breathtaking drop in the crime rate has made poor black neighborhoods safe and habitable in cities across the country for the first time in Michelle Obama's lifetime - since the crime spiral that made them intolerable places to live began in the year of her birth, 1964. >>> But none of this is likely to impress Michelle Obama, who sees even her own prosperous life as a struggle in which she just barely manages "to keep it all together." This despite the fact that she and Barack earned more than $990,000 in 2005, according to their tax return. In fairness, Ms. Obama did stipulate that the money Barack made on his books put the couple over the top financially (she refers to the book proceeds as "like Jack and his magic beans"). Yet even without the magic beans, the Obamas made $430,700 in wages and salary during 2005. Still, Michelle Obama sees fit to whine about the $10,000 or so the family pays for various lessons and activities for their two daughters. To my knowledge, she has lodged no comparable complaint about the $22,500 "cash contribution" the family made to Trinity United Church of Christ (according to the 2005 tax returns).
