Well, here are my favorite ways to get to oil independence while being good to the environment:
* nuclear and lots of it
* carbon sequestration of carbon-electricity plants
* wind, solar, thermal, wave power
* heavy incentives for all electric cars, banning gas burning cars within 20 years
* heavy taxation of oil companies and gasoline, in the category of vice taxes, such as those on cigarettes and alcohol
* repeal of all incentives to oil companies, including cheap leases of gov't land, incentives for off-shore drilling
* make it legal to drill in ANWR, but charge a boatload for the leases and pass a law that requires them to leave the area pristine as part of their operation
* normalize trade with Cuba...if we allow trade with Hugo Chavez, why not Cuba? make it legal to contract to drill off-shore Cuba
