Our (R) friends will guard our morals! Sound familiar? ) 3/11/2008 1:38:09 PM New York Republicans will seek to impeach embattled Governor Eliot Spitzer if he doesn't resign voluntarily in the next 48 hours, a spokesman said Tuesday. Calls for Spitzer's resignation came following his alleged involvement in a prostitution ring, for which he publicly apologized Monday. He has not yet directly admitted involvement and has not discussed a possible resignation. “The governor has 48 hours to resign or articles of impeachment would be introduced,” Josh Fitzpatrick, spokesman for Assembly Republican Minority Leader James Tedisco, told Reuters. Both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have reported that the Governor's top aides expect him to resign. They also expect that second in command, Lieutenant Governor David Paterson will take over for Spitzer. The news broke Monday that Spitzer, who in part built his reputation on busting prostitution rings, had been caught by a federal wiretap participating in such a ring. His involvement was first reported by the New York Times Monday, stating that he informed top aides Sunday night. The Governor apologized to his family and the public in a brief press conference Monday afternoon. "I have acted in a way that violated the obligations to my family and that violates my — or any — sense of right and wrong," Mr. Spitzer said. "I apologize first, and most importantly, to my family. I apologize to the public whom I promised better. I do not believe that politics in the long run is about individuals. It is about ideas, the public good and doing what is best for the State of New York. But I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard that I expect of myself.” Spitzer is married with three children. His wife, Silda, stood beside him at the press conference, hands clasped behind her back and eyes downcast during the statement. The scandal is especially sensitive due to Spitzer's attacks on prostitution rings during his two terms as New York State Attorney General. One of those investigations from 2004 resulted in 18 arrests on charges of promoting prostitution, among others.
