Report: Digital Universe growing faster than expectedBoston Business Journal - Boston Business Journal

The digital universe is growing faster than expected, according to a new report released Tuesday.

The digital universe in 2007 was 10 percent bigger than previous estimated at 281 billion gigabytes, a study by Framingham, Mass.-based IDC found. The study was sponsored by Hopkinton, Mass.-based EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC). IDC is a subsidiary of Boston, Mass.-based IDG.

At nearly a 60 percent annual compound growth rate, the digital universe is projected to reach 1.8 zettabytes by 2011. At the same time individual's digital shadow, the amount of digital information generated about the average person on a daily basis, now exceeds the amount individuals create themselves, the study said.
