He informed Gates of his decision today in the wake of an Esquire magazine article that portrayed him as an ardent opponent within the administration of war with Iran to halt its possible building of a nuclear bomb.

Thomas Barnett will take one hell of hit with the Military because of this. It's his Esquire article that did Fallon in. He won't get a lot of phone calls returned now.

Fallon Stepping Down as Mideast Commander

On the surface, I see nothing ominous in Fallon's resignation.

Next week he completes one year in the job, and it is a back to back overseas tour.
Also worth noting that he was commissioned in 1967. 41 years is an exceptionally long military career.

I do see two signs of a riff between SECDEF and the branches.

Last Monday the army, navy, and USMC reported collectively having 131 - three and four star generals/admirals any one of whom could succeed Fallon.
That makes me wonder about this comment by Gates, "Admiral Fallon will be difficult to replace," Gates said. "He is enormously talented."
I wonder if that was a compliment, a put down, or both?

There is a message in the first part of this quote, "I believe it was the right thing to do, even though I do not believe there are in fact significant differences between his views and administration policy," Gates told reporters at the Pentagon.

The dramatic increase in congressional oversight announced a few days included reaching out to all the junior ranks for advice. That probably scared the hell out of a lot of GOs.
Some dirty undies are sure to be aired.
