Your generalization is inaccurate. CompuServe, for instance, developed its own networks, which was a mix of proprietary and open standards.

Not only that, but you're acting like the government invented the whole digital information industry. The truth is a lot more complex and a lot less dramatic than your claim that government was directly involved in birthing this new industry.

Our government has traditionally built transportation infrastructure. From the canal system in the Northeast to the highway system. And it has paid off every time.
