Tim, any time gov't money is involved, with the notable exception of war and defense, you all want to close it down. We are never going to agree what the priorities are.

Trade in energy sources existed before. In some cases even wood (although that was probably more for building that fuel), certainly coal. Oil is traded to a much greater extent (even after adjusting for the fact that our economies are much bigger now, and likely even after adjusting for the growth in trade, which is higher than the economic growth because trade makes up a much larger part of the economies of the nations of the world), but so what? The fact that we import oil doesn't really change the point.

As for a pollutant, you don't think burning wood and coal caused pollution, and other forms of environmental harm?

much like we did with the space program.

The space program, over its entire existence, is pitifully small compared to the level of investment needed to do something like switch away from oil.
