Wbmw:

Do you know the definition of "typical"? Evidently you don't. Given that, what kind of engineer or scientist doesn't know the meaning of that simple word (or the foreign language equivalent)? One who has no business being either.

It refers to the average size of the die (they give themselves plenty of leeway for other sizes). In the other document, the two die sizes are accurately reflected to a resolution of 0.01mm2. They have the passivity coatings too. Yet their die areas are exact. Thus, the coatings don't affect die size at the resolutions given. If you measure to 0.01mm tolerances, you might see the coating.

And the insulative coatings can't be too thick as the dies are cooled by removing heat from the top of the die, actually the back of the die due to flip chip packaging. Try cooling a mobile CPU with a 0.25mm plate of glass between the heatsink and the die. Doesn't work well, if at all.
