It is part of 'who he is'. We agree on that. You seem to think it has meaning beyond the value I give it. He wouldn't be who he is if he sported cowboy hats, wore dread locks, was hispanic, white, or Asian either. It is part of who he is and contributes something, ok a lot, to his presentation.

Take a major descriptor away from any of the candidates and you see the same thing. What if McCain converts to Shi'ite Islam instead of Christianity ... out he goes. He wears white Christian conservative very well.

If you exaggerate the importance of Obama's race you place more value on it than it deserves and you'll probably find that the majority of Americans want to put their vote where it would contribute to good race relations. Many may already be leaning toward him for that reason. I'd prefer to diminish that issue as much as possible because I think it is a very poor reason, on its own, to elect someone to office. It is something but not enough.

My suggestion, therefore is to encourage an 'it doesn't really matter' consciousness. The other issues are far far more important and should dwarf this one. Perception is reality.

How has his heritage affected his place in the presidential race?
