Want a bizarre idea? How about rewarding every member of Congress with a 1% bonus (or another percentage to make it worth their while) for each dollar of reduction in spending from the previous year. That would not only satisfy their criminal greed, but would probably reduce government spending. <G>

How about how bill clinton`s policies that had restored this countries finances from the destructive path that Raygun and George H W Bush had lead us down?

Cut spending and/or increase taxes. The same way states turn deficits into surpluses. Individuals do it too. Why can't the Federal government?

rock, the sad truth is, it's political suicide for any elected official to propose tax hikes or spending cuts. The voters in this country simply don't understand the issues or the consequences of continual budget deficits. I doubt that 10% of the electorate even has a basic understanding of what we're discussing here, that there's a connection between U.S. deficits and the reduced purchasing power of the dollar. Based on how the remaining presidential candidates speak about the economy, I wonder if any of them even really understand it, let alone have any conviction to fix it.

The only place I find hope for any change on this front is in the new organization David Walker is heading up, The Peter G Peterson Foundation:

Withdraw from Iraq. Cut the defense dept budget in half. Elect Lee Iacocca as a write in candidate for president and David Walker as vice pres. I think Lee Iacocca at 83 would still accomplish a lot.

edit: removed unneeded reference to current pres.
