This is actually very similar to the issue of Romney being a Mormon.

Is it an advantage of disadvantage?

For him it was clearly a negative.

There are way more republicans that will vote against him because he's a Mormon than there are republicans that will vote for him because he's a Mormon.

Obviously though, if the election was held in Utah, it would be a huge advantage. It's all about the demographics of the population doing the voting and whether one specific attribute of a candidate will cause voters to sway one way or the other and produce a net positive or negative. That's how you measure it as a stand alone factor.
