Why has Congress not been on top of this?

K, who is your rep? Who are your senators? Did you see Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D), grilling Bernanke a short while back? Didn't know who he was or what he did.

Your faith in these people exceeds mine.

The mortgage crisis should have been prevented by stronger oversight at various levels. Right now the government is frantically locking the barn doors after the horse has escaped.

But in a larger sense, it can be argued that the mortgage fiasco is just one aspect of a much larger problem: that the USA is a hubristic, decadent, overextended empire of debt and unfunded obligations. The implications of an imploding economy are pretty severe. It would sure increase the pressure to pull out of Iraq.
