I attend the High Country United Church of Christ in NC when there. It is concerned about social justice for all. ML, that's, as you know, the classic social gossip theology. Obama was precisely right to call it such. Walter Rauschenbush is considered to be the most prominent protestant theologian. But that theology was heavily criticized by folk like Reinhold Neibuhr, became less important in theological education until, perhaps the middle 60s, when liberation theology drew from both and appeared in both the protestant and catholic churches. The catholic church in central and south america was, as no doubt you know, one of the principle locuses of liberation theology. Having said all that, I think Obama is right to call it social gossip at Trinity. Best I can tell it was more that and less liberation theology. Despite what Wright said. But I'm only guessing about that.
