I like the longer charts to help determine how much time the different processes/trends took before changing. After the 2001/2002 collapse, the 10600-10700 area was tough resistance and it took a few years to finally break through and not look back. Your point is valid, though. Another issue is that the index gets its components changed every now and then, so that looking back may not be exactly an apples to apples comparison.
