I can appreciate the comfort zone issue, Karen. I have a different one, which is that I've only become familiar with Wright's work in the last week or so. So I can't say much about it. But my immediate take is that Trinity Church is more social gospel than liberation theology. I reach that conclusion by reading their website and by the testimonials the United Church of Christ has offered, and by watching at least one video of the supervising white UCC official. She and her husband attend the church regularly (and may even be members, I can't recall precisely). They are, obviously, quite impressed. But, more important, the language she used was more social gospel language than liberation theology language. I think, but don't know, that Wright himself was a mix of the two and that one would see it more clearly by looking at his work more closely. I don't plan to do that because I'm satisfied about Obama on the basis of his book. And the conclusion I reached, reading it, which I've typed here often, is that he is a remarkable person to be able to live through the black experience in the US with as much equanimity as he displays. Absolutely remarkable. And it's also important to note that book was written in the middle 90s.
