If Obama tried to totally disassociate himself from someone he has known for 20 years he would lose more support than he would gain. The only chance he has is to try to bridge the gap in White and African American understanding...check this out...

This plays into Obama's overall message, so it could work. The idea that we can vote for a black man, but not one that associates with other black men is just silly. It means this country is racist and will remain so. The crazy thing is that retired pastor Wright has been the head minister of a relatively mainstream congregation -- a church where Oprah and Tiger Woods have attended some services over the years. Wright does NOT speak for Barack Obama and it should be clear to most Americans that we can NOT hold a candidate responsible for everything a current or former pastor has said during a sermon. Guilt by association is totally unacceptable in this country...and the Dems may need help from a 527 Group to hammer this home OVER AND OVER again before November 4th, 2008.
