They are in a position of optimistic observation. If they tell the truth, then they are accused of irresponsible journalism and upset the advertisers, cause mass panic. If they stay optimistic and play the field, then the worst that can happen is they are accused of being " uninformed" when the calamity finally takes hold.

CNBC will not exist at the secular bear market bottom. The
biggest thing is confidence in the Fed's credibility. I gather
foreigners have lost it - almost. In the US it is still
declining from very high levels last year. At the bottom it
will be completely lost, and nobody will trust BLS numbers.
In fact, the Fed itself may get abolished if they cause
the dollar crash of 80-90% (possible, if they keep bailing
everyone out!) or a hyperinflation.
