I don't know who would ever have denied racism in the black community. One had only to look at Farrakhan- though I'm not really sure whether he is "left" or "right". When someone is that far out there, it gets hard to tell.

I think moderate people on both sides of the aisle have always known that on the edges there are hateful elements. Trying to figure out who has the grossest weight of hate would seem to be the kind of thing people at the angry margins would be interested in. You can tote up a lot of hate for both sides, and the very best thing that can happen (imo) is for all of us not on the margins to try to clearly show our distaste of the hate, and draw lines between ourselves and the more hateful elements. We can't really eliminate such views in a free society, but we can shine the light on them, and try to find a middle way- as free of hate as it can be.
