Bob;

Also remember I speak of balance. Some find it impossible to consider increasing production of traditional domestic energy supplies. I find that amazing

As far as balance is concerned - is that why there where all those solar and wind people at Cheney's power summit when Bush came into office - to help create balance? If Bush only had even a hint of a balanced energy policy.

The cheap oil is already in production. Even at these prices oil is getting harder and harder to find. We are drilling in deeper and deeper waters and doing some creative production followups, but it is getting harder and harder to get competitive oil. If there were no other alternatives, then any decision about staying with the heroin would be more difficult. But we now do. .....Bob, I changed my mind when after being promised that the oil from Alaska would be shipped in double hulled tankers and that consequently there would never be an oil spill - the Exxon Valdez ran aground and dumped oil all over that pristine coast. Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice shame on me.

Even if we go drill in every place you want - we still soon run out of oil. It just gets harder and harder to find and thus more expensive. But hey, I know you want to spew as much CO2 as we can get into the atmosphere - future generations be damned.

Balance? Explain that to your grandkids.

steve

One is possible - the other is not. Remember this started with a discussion of the weak dollar as being something evil. In reality a weak dollar will discourage imports and encourage exports. Where this falls apart is the counter balancing ballooning of the cost of energy imports. When the cost of energy imports is so huge - it is like chasing your tail.

True. But that means it is most likely possible to make progress on the manufactured goods imbalance first. However, point taken, the energy side will get worse with a falling $, while the manufacturing side will improve, sans specific actions, so we perhaps should direct additional measures at the one getting worse.

Next year the Democrats will have to solve these problems. Wanna bet the story changes?

I would expect all three of the current runners to address energy much better than Bush has done, and all three would also have a better environmental bent in their approach as well. Not sure who would be most successful at it.

I'm actually quite happy with the field from the environmental side, which is likely my biggest political concern. All would be more pragmatic than Al Gore (although I suspect he would do well too). From an economic perspective, I suspect Hillary would do the best. I suspect Obama would be the best from a national motivational perspective. I suspect McCain would interface the best with the military and might well do the best job on "successfully" completing our Iraq misadventures, but his 100 year war desires scare the heck out of me if that is what he really thinks.

Bob are you for nuclear at all. I was around for the Three Mile Island debacle and Chernobyl but I still am for it.
Out on Long Island the expensive Nuclear plant that was built in Shoreham never opened as the citizenry rose up.

On a program about sleep deprivation on 60 Minutes I was informed that both 3 mile and Chernobyl were human error from lack of sleep.. Also the Exxon Valdez..

It's the getting rid of the waste from these plants that concerns me.

Unless we start domestic production of oil in spite of my being an environmentalist (what else right ? ) I hate being dependent on OPEC... I never rented a thing as I hate beholding to anyone..

We have to wean ourselves from dependence..

We are too use to having electricty and WATER my other concern.

The builders here in Fl. where water is scarce put pools and
jacuzzi in all new homes. AND the lawns, instead of being Zoysa (ex. sp.) grass is Augustine which takes a lot of water.
We are still ho hum about natural resources....
