Rumour has it that Bear Stearns shareholders might block the deal anyway, without China doing a swindle. Refusing to accept $2 when their intrinsic value is $0 might not be so bright though. I accepted $9 for GSAT recently, and the price is now $6. Sometimes it's wiser to accept there has been an adjustment of values.

Also, if China did outbid JPM, that would not guarantee that the financial system would collapse. But it would guarantee a financial loss for China.

I doubt that China would fancy their stash of US$ being turned to confetti. I expect they would like the system to be stabilized by Big Ben and co without too much dilution.
