Maybe short term (although the ancillary benefits might outweigh any cost disadvantage).

Short term it costs more including direct and indirect benefits and problems associated with each.

Long term the direct cost is likely to be higher for many years to come. Indirect costs are a bit more difficult to calculate over this time frame, and I doubt we would even agree as to what cost to count or how to count them, let alone the final net figures.

Very long term (over multiple decades) the cost probably goes the other way. But over such time periods the markets can adjust themselves, at at least for the direct cost, they are far more efficient at figuring out what is the lowest cost solution than any political decision would be, esp. some massive political decision taken now.

It's a matter of degree. What level of economic pain are you willing to tolerate before you get off your ass?

Forcing a massive turn to other energy sources would be causing economic pain.
